Arthur Friedman, Ph.D., LICSW

Arthur Friedman is a nationally recognized consultant with over 30 years experience as a clinician, administrator, policy-maker, consultant, advocate and national expert. He has worked extensively with a wide range of populations including individuals and families affected by mental illness, substance abuse, child abuse and neglect, problem gambling and more.

In 1979, after receiving a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York, Dr. Friedman worked in the addictions field, counseling chronic substance abusers in recovery. After obtaining a master’s degree in social work from the University of Buffalo in 1981, he relocated to the Boston area, where he built his career for the next twelve years. During that time, Dr. Friedman ran both public non-profit and private for-profit counseling centers and served as a guardian ad litem to the Massachusetts Probate and Family courts.

In 1990 Dr. Friedman was admitted to the prestigious Simmons College School of Social Work as a doctoral candidate. As the oldest school of social work in the country, he had the opportunity to study with Sophie Freud, and other accomplished scholars and faculty. In 1998, Dr. Friedman received his Ph.D. from Simmons after completing the dissertation, “Prevalence and Correlates of Suicidal Ideation and Self-Reported Attempts in an Adolescent Community Population”, based on a longitudinal community sample of youth ages 15 and 18.

Soon after receiving his doctorate, Dr. Friedman applied the clinical paradigm of his counseling work to organizations and started Advanced Consulting Services. In the past 12 years, he has worked with over 45 public and private agencies, and has provided specialized consulting services to state agencies, local municipalities, hospitals and health, education and human service organizations. At the present time, Dr. Friedman co-chairs the Children’s Justice Act Task Force for the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families, and provides oversight to federal funding targeted at the needs of sexually exploited child victims and their families. In addition, utilizing his expertise in mental health and substance abuse, and his knowledge of public and private systems, Dr. Friedman has been an expert reviewer for the state’s child near fatalities and fatalities.

On a national basis, Dr. Friedman serves as an Expert Witness for class-action child welfare lawsuits and as Consultant to child and family governmental agencies. In 2007 he served as Clinical Consultant for an advocacy-based initiative resulting in “Masha’s Law”, a federal law to increase penalties for child pornographers. Dr. Friedman currently provides outpatient psychotherapy to children, teens, adults and families in Northampton, Amherst and South Hadley. With an expertise in treating individuals diagnosed with post-traumatic stress and other anxiety disorders, his practice is focused on “trauma-informed” treatment and other integrated treatment models.

Dr. Friedman is the father of two children and lives in Amherst, Massachusetts.
